The Ranch: A Retreat Reflection by Justine Allison
At a Taste & See retreat, Justine Allison spent two hours outdoors in prayer. Beside a metal fence, surrounded by wildflowers, wind, and birdsong, she began to wonder about others who might have stood there before her, bringing their burdens and receiving God’s care.
She shared this reflection with us afterward. Her words offer a glimpse of what can unfold when we give ourselves time to become still and attentive to God’s presence.
The Ranch
By Justine Allison
In years long gone by, who else has stood on this very spot in God’s presence?
What did they think, pray, try to rationalize, leave behind?
What did God relieve them from, carrying it away on the warm breeze to lighten their burden and gently release their need to control?
What did He place in their hearts, like a treasured gift to nurture and soothe them in their days ahead?
Did they, too, feel a warm hug and kiss from the wind? Did the sweet smells of the field fill their senses, becoming a future reminder when they recognize the fragrance again?
Did they feel the heat on the metal fence that first seemed like a restrictive border, then became a beautiful, endless guide—a safety to keep them from harm?
Did the strong wind make them reach for the fence for security, balance, and strength?
Did the constant shrill of insects in the grass make a melodious backdrop for their thoughts, rising with the clang of the gate or the tune of songbirds?
Did fluttering, jumping bugs pop up around their ankles as they walked along a secluded path, as if to say, Welcome! We’re so happy you came!
Did they receive a beautiful, multicolored bouquet from the fields fit for a wedding celebration?
And did they feel like a child of the King—blessed beyond measure?
