Traveling to Iona: 2027 Hineni Pilgrimage Guide

/blogs/iona-pilgrimage/travel-to-iona-2027

The journey to Iona is part of the pilgrimage. It requires several connections, a little patience, and enough margin to travel without rushing.

Begin Planning Now

If you are traveling from the United States, reaching Iona requires two days of travel from the date you depart:

Thursday, September 23, 2027
Depart the United States on an overnight flight to Scotland.

Friday, September 24, 2027
Arrive in Edinburgh or Glasgow, travel by train to Oban, and stay overnight in Oban.

Saturday, September 25, 2027
Travel from Oban by ferry, bus, and ferry to reach Iona.

You need to arrive in Scotland and reach Oban on September 24 so you are ready to begin the final portion of the journey on September 25.

We strongly recommend building additional time into your plans whenever possible. International flight delays, missed train connections, and transportation changes can affect the entire journey.

Reserve Your Oban Hotel Now

Hotel rooms in Oban are already booking for September 2027. Please reserve a room in Oban for the night of Friday, September 24, 2027, as soon as possible.

Staying in Oban the night before provides the safest and most relaxed beginning to your journey to Iona.

It may be possible to stay in Glasgow on September 24 and take an early train to Oban the following morning. However, a train delay or missed connection could prevent you from reaching Iona in time for the retreat. For that reason, Hineni strongly recommends staying in Oban.

Choosing a Hotel in Oban

Most pilgrims will arrive in Oban by train and walk to their hotel while carrying or rolling their luggage. The train station and ferry terminal are located very near one another, but not every hotel is equally convenient.

Before reserving a room, consider:

  • The walking distance from the Oban train station and ferry terminal

  • Whether the route includes hills, steps, or uneven pavement

  • Whether the hotel has a lift, which is the British term for an elevator

  • Whether the room has air conditioning

  • Whether staff can assist with luggage

  • The size of the room and beds- double beds are small for two people- look for twin

  • Whether breakfast is available early enough for your ferry departure

  • The hotel’s cancellation policy

Air conditioning is less common in Scotland than in the United States, particularly in older or historic hotels. Never assume that a hotel has air conditioning or a lift. Contact the hotel directly if either amenity is important to you.

If you are traveling with a friend and want separate beds, reserve a twin room. UK bed sizes and room descriptions differ from those in the United States. A UK double bed is similar to a U.S. full-size bed and may feel small for two adults. If you are sharing a room but prefer separate beds, reserve a twin room, which normally includes two single beds or a king split apart. Couples wanting a larger shared bed should look for a king or super king room. Always confirm the number and size of the beds directly with the hotel before booking.

Suggested Oban Hotels

These are suggestions rather than Hineni group reservations. Prices, availability, accessibility, and room features should be confirmed directly with each hotel before booking.

Perle Oban Hotel & Spa

A more upscale hotel in the center of Oban, directly across from the harbor and very close to the train station and ferry terminal. The hotel offers single rooms, double rooms, and suites. Because it is housed in a historic building, confirm lift access and air conditioning for your specific room before booking.

The Royal Hotel

A traditional, moderately priced hotel in Argyll Square. It is approximately 0.1 mile from the train station and ferry terminal. The hotel has a lift serving its guest-room floors, but accessibility within an older building may vary. Confirm that your assigned room is accessible by lift and ask whether air conditioning is available.

Premier Inn Oban

A familiar, moderately priced chain hotel near the harbor. It is a short walk from the train station and ferry terminal, although slightly farther than the Perle or Royal. The hotel advertises air conditioning in all rooms and offers double, twin, and accessible rooms. A lift is available, but pilgrims with mobility concerns should confirm access when reserving.

The Whisky Vaults Hotel

A small, above pub-style boutique hotel in central Oban. It offers double and twin rooms and is convenient for restaurants, shops, and the harbor. All guest rooms are accessible only by stairs. There is no lift. This is best for pilgrims who can comfortably carry their luggage upstairs.

The Ranald Hotel

A small hotel just off Oban’s main street, within walking distance of the train station and ferry terminal. It offers several room sizes as well as apartments. The hotel does not have a lift, although staff may be able to assist with luggage. Confirm air conditioning and your room’s location before booking.

Oban Bay Hotel

A waterfront hotel with attractive views, a spa, and an on-site restaurant. It is farther along the esplanade than the hotels near Station Square, so it involves a longer walk from the train station and ferry terminal. Pilgrims with luggage may prefer to arrange a taxi. Confirm lift access and air conditioning for your room.

The Final Journey to Iona

The final journey has three stages:

  1. Ferry from Oban to Craignure on the Isle of Mull

  2. Bus from Craignure across Mull to Fionnphort

  3. Short Ferry from Fionnphort to Iona

The beautiful bus ride across Mull is the most important connection because it operates only a few times each day. Plan your journey around the bus schedule rather than the more frequent ferry from Fionnphort to Iona.

You must arrive on Iona by 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 25, 2027.

Check-in at the St. Columba Hotel begins at 4:00 p.m., and our opening pilgrimage gathering begins promptly at 4:30 p.m.

Recommended Departure from Oban

We recommend the mid-day option because it allows pilgrims recovering from an overnight international flight to have a restful morning in Oban. You can enjoy a great breakfast and coffee at Roxy's and pick up a sandwich at the Subway or local shop to eat on the bus. It is best to bring your lunch with you and not rely on options at Mull by the bus terminal with a short exchange time.

Make a note to always arrive at train, bus and ferry terminals early enough to check in and board. Arriving at the scheduled departure time means you are late.

Based on the 2026 transportation schedule:

  • 12:15 p.m.: Ferry departs Oban

  • 1:05 p.m.: Ferry arrives in Craignure on Mull

  • 1:20 p.m.: Bus departs Craignure

  • 2:40 p.m.: Bus arrives in Fionnphort

  • Take the next available passenger ferry from Fionnphort to Iona

  • 3:15 p.m.: Arrive on Iona - Hotel will greet you to take your luggage so you can enjoy your first short walk on Iona to the hotel

  • 4:00 p.m.: Check in at the St. Columba Hotel in the light-filled sun lounge with panoramic sea views over the Sound of Iona.

  • 4:30 p.m.: Opening pilgrimage Gathering

Morning Journey

Pilgrims who prefer to arrive on Iona earlier may choose the morning option.

Based on the 2026 transportation schedule:

  • 7:25 a.m.: Ferry departs Oban

  • 8:15 a.m.: Ferry arrives in Craignure

  • 8:30 a.m.: Bus departs Craignure

  • 9:50 a.m.: Bus arrives in Fionnphort

  • Take the next available passenger ferry to Iona

  • Approximately 10:05 a.m.: Arrive on Iona

Hotel rooms will not be available until 4:00 p.m., but the St. Columba Hotel can store luggage until check-in.
