Examen
The Examen: Finding God in Your Day
The Examen prayer practice is a prayerful review of the day. We reflect on our experiences and responses, noticing our Consolations- where we felt close to God and our Desolations- where we felt distant. Over time, this practice helps us recognize God’s presence and guidance in everyday life.
Where the Examen Prayer Practice Comes From
The Examen comes from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, developed in the sixteenth century. Ignatius believed we could encounter God in all things, including the ordinary moments of each day.
How to Practice the Examen Prayer Practice
Set aside 10 to 15 quiet minutes near the end of the day.
- Ask for light. Invite God to help you see the day clearly.
- Give thanks. Remember a moment for which you are especially grateful.
- Review the day. Notice your experiences, emotions, choices, and responses.
- Notice consolation and desolation. Where did you experience life, love, peace, or closeness to God? Where did you feel depleted, disconnected, or unable to give and receive love?
- Look toward tomorrow. Bring the coming day to God and ask for wisdom, hope, and help.
End with a few moments of silence, trusting that God meets you with love in everything you have noticed.
