Contemplative Reflection
Contemplative Reflection: Listening with the Heart
Contemplative Reflection is the prayerful reading of Scripture, poetry, devotional writing, or other spiritually meaningful words. We read slowly, listening for a word, phrase, image, or idea through which God may be speaking to us.
Where Contemplative Reflection Comes From
Contemplative Reflection grows from the Christian tradition of meditating on Scripture and spiritual writings. Rather than reading only to gather information, we bring the words into prayer and allow them to move from the mind into the heart.
How to Practice Contemplative Reflection
Choose a short poem, passage, prayer, or piece of music or spiritual writing.
- Become present. Sit comfortably, breathe deeply, and acknowledge God’s presence.
- Listen. Listen to the passage read aloud slowly without trying to analyze it.
- Abide. Listen again and rest quietly with God as you receive the words.
- Notice. Listen once more for a word, phrase, image, or question that rises up and draws your attention.
- Respond. Reflect prayerfully on what arose and speak honestly with God. Is there an invitation, confession, or question to pray through? Is there a line of inspiration to meditate on?
- Carry it with you. Journal what you noticed and choose a word or thought to remember throughout the day.
