Breath Prayer
Breath prayer is prayer spoken with the rhythms of our breathing. We breathe in as we call on God and we breathe out a simple prayer desire.
Where the Breath Prayer comes from
Breath Prayer is an ancient Christian practice closely connected to the Jesus Prayer. It echoes the cry of Bartimaeus in Mark 10.
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of David, have mercy on me a sinner.”
Christians have long used short, repeated prayers to remain attentive to God throughout the day.
How to pray a breath prayer
Settle into stillness and allow your breathing to become natural. As you inhale, silently pray a name for God. As you exhale, offer a simple desire or response.
Inhale: Lord Jesus
Exhale: Have mercy.
You might also create a personal prayer:
Inhale: God of peace
Exhale: Calm my anxious heart.
Continue for several minutes, allowing the words to become stepping stones into silence and deeper awareness of God’s presence.
